LSU and Ohio State Partner on Community Service Project

January 7, 2008 — Before the LSU Tigers and the Ohio State Buckeyes met on the gridiron in the BCS National Championship Game officials and fans from both universities teamed up to rebuild two New Orleans baseball fields that were devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

Volunteers rebuilt the baseball fields at the Boys and Girls Club of New Orleans and made blankets that will be distributed to the area’s homeless. The public service project took place on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008 at the Boys and Girls Club on S. Broad St.

OSU Vice President Rich Hollingsworth, LSU Chancellor Sean O’Keefe, and Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu opened the event with brief statements.

Approximately 200 students, faculty, staff, administrators, former football players, fans and other volunteers from both universities were on hand with shovels, wheelbarrows, wrenches and gardening gloves to help rebuild infields and pitchers mounds, repair bleachers and paint buildings and railings. LSU’s costumed mascot, Mike the Tiger and Ohio State's Brutus the Buckeye were also be on hand. At the end of the project, Campus Federal Credit Union provided jambalaya for the volunteers.
