May 23, 2007 — ExxonMobil employees and retirees have again demonstrated their generosity and commitment to higher education with another large donation to LSU’s academic programs. On Monday, May 21, 2007, the ExxonMobil Foundation presented a check to LSU for $988,406, which comprises ExxonMobil's 3 to 1 match on funds collected during their 2006 Educational Matching Gift Program.
This year, LSU is ranked number one among universities nationwide in receiving gifts from the Educational Matching Gift Program. The total $1.3 million gift to LSU is comprised of $330,750 collected from ExxonMobil employees and retirees matched on a 3 to 1 basis ($988,406) from ExxonMobil Corporation. In all, 330 individual gifts were made to LSU in 2006.
“What’s truly inspiring about a gift like this is that it’s a partnership between individuals and one of the great corporations of the world,” says Maj. Gen., USMC (Ret.) William Bowdon, President and CEO of the LSU Foundation. “Together, the employees of ExxonMobil and their corporation give to LSU consistently every year, reflecting a shared attitude of support for higher education and a strong belief in the quality of our work here at LSU. The LSU Foundation is grateful to have the support of ExxonMobil, and we thank their employees and retirees for being the catalyst that makes this gift possible,” he says.
Under the ExxonMobil 2006 Educational Matching Gift Program, a donor could give up to $7,500 a year to colleges or universities, which would then be matched on a 3 to 1 basis up to $22,500. Many donors in 2006 gave in excess of the $7,500 matching limit. Participants in the program also included surviving spouses of former employees and company directors.
