BATON ROUGE – LSU announced a $4.75 million gift commitment from Chevron Corporation – the largest one-time corporate cash donation to the LSU Foundation in its history – at a news conference on Feb. 28.

Chevron Corporation’s gift will support multiple programs within the LSU College of Engineering, as well as the College of Basic Sciences and the E. J. Ourso College of Business, and furthers a significant relationship between LSU and one of the largest integrated energy companies in the world.

Of the $4.75 million, $3.9 million of the gift will go to the College of Engineering toward four designated focus areas, establishing:

  1. The Chevron Petroleum Engineering Emerging Faculty Recruitment Fund – $1 million commitment – in the Craft & Hawkins Department of Petroleum Engineering,
  2. The Chevron Engineering Professorship Support and Development Fund – $1 million commitment – in several engineering departments,
  3. The Chevron Engineering Post-Doctoral and Graduate Student Fellowship Fund – $1 million  commitment – in engineering disciplines that will be awarded competitively to qualified applicants with preference to underrepresented groups,
  4. The Chevron Engineering Multi-disciplinary Reservoir Visualization Center – $900,000 commitment – which will be a program based in the Craft & Hawkins Department of Petroleum Engineering that will benefit students in Petroleum Engineering, Geology and Geophysics, and Information Systems & Decision Sciences.

“The LSU College of Engineering, especially through its Craft & Hawkins Department of Petroleum Engineering, has enjoyed a productive relationship with Chevron that has spanned many decades,” said LSU College of Engineering Dean Zaki Bassiouni.  “Hundreds of LSU engineers have had successful careers at Chevron, while Chevron has supported LSU departments and programs generously. This new gift from Chevron represents a transformational investment in the College of Engineering and will propel our efforts to recruit and retain exemplary professors and graduate students and significantly enhance our academic programs.”

Chevron will also continue its annual funding of LSU scholarships and department grants, with a total of $850,000 going to the LSU College of Engineering, College of Basic Sciences and the E. J. Ourso College of Business over five years.

“Chevron has an unwavering commitment to being a good partner focused on building productive, collaborative, trusting and beneficial relationships. There is no better example of that commitment than our continued partnership with LSU,” said President of Chevron North America Exploration & Production Gary Luquette.

The relationship between Chevron Corporation and LSU has continued and strengthened over many years. More than 400 current Chevron employees worldwide received their academic degrees from LSU.  Each year, Chevron matches about $150,000 in employee gifts to LSU, which doubles the impact of its employees’ philanthropy.

Prior to the gift announced on Feb. 28, Chevron Corporation had given more than $2.4 million to LSU.  Most of those gifts were designated to the College of Engineering.

Chevron Corporation’s gift also makes an impact on the goals of the Forever LSU campaign, a comprehensive fundraising effort with the mission of raising $750 million in support of LSU by the end of 2010.   To find out how you can get involved with this historic campaign for LSU, visit www.foreverlsu.org.
